Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:

This Clare Valley Grenache 2022 is an absolute beauty. It has a vibrant display of fresh red cherry, raspberry and red current fruits with a plush savory tannin structure and soft acid finish giving elegance to the wine. The winery sells this wine under their brand for $28.00 per bottle so it’s a bargain for you under our Limited Release label at $20.00!

My Score 95/100 WACC Trophy.

About The Producer

The first vines at this winery were planted in the 1930s in Clare Valley and produce their superb top tier range of wines. As South Australia is phylloxera free, and didn’t suffer the scourge of this vineyard disease which wiped out most of the world’s vineyards, these are some of the older vines still in commercial use in the world.

In 1963, the founders of the winery purchased the Devlin’s Pound property near Overland Corner in South Australia and planted the limestone based vineyard to a range of grape varieties, most notably Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay which have all received Gold medals for their premium wine quality.

About the region:

The town of Clare is situated 136km north of Adelaide and this winery is just 5kms from the town’s main street. They are opposite South Australia’s finest country racecourse in the beautiful northern end of the Clare Valley at Stanley Flat and have 36.4 hectares under vine. The Stanley Flat sub-region is the oldest grape producing area in the district and is sheltered by the rising hills of the valley.

The vines at this winery were planted over 40 years ago, utilising the excellent soil profiles of this site and the underground water supply for irrigation to produce our quality vines. The varieties grown include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Merlot and Sangiovese. This mature vineyard delivers superb Clare Valley regional characteristics of rich and elegant flavours. The Shiraz vines are located in the area of low hills north of Clare, at an elevation of 400 metres above sea level. The area is blessed with a climate ideal for premium grape growing and the combination of consistently good winter rains, hot summers tempered by cool nights and long ripening periods, all combine to produce grapes with exceptional character and balance.

What is Grenache

Once the world’s most-planted grape variety, grenache is claimed by both Spain and Italy via the island of Sardinia, but its exact origin is uncertain. It’s an indisputable fact, however, that mutations of the grape over the centuries have led to grenache rouge, gris and blanc.

Grenache has been around since the beginning of Australia’s winegrowing history, initially used for fortified wines. But it has only recently begun to hit its stride, playing an integral role in many red blends and increasingly showing up in single-varietal styles.

If you’re testing your palate with a blind tasting, the telltale signs of grenache are the candied fruit roll-up and cinnamon hit. Medium- to full-bodied but bright in colour, grenache is packed with aromas of orange rind, raspberry, plum and tobacco. Your typical grenache boasts balanced tannins, medium acidity and plush berries, making it a crowd-pleasing wine.
