About The Wine and Icon:

He was the epitome of style and sophistication combined with avant-garde flamboyance. His music was innovative, left of field, ever changing and just plain unique.

We only lost him recently and the world is still in mourning over the loss of this legendary artist of our times. It’s hard to think of another celebrity artist who was so committed to using his elevated stature to bring transgressive ideas into the mainstream, reshaping it many times over. “Starman,” the glam anthem that made him a bona fide UK sensation in the summer of ’72, wasn’t just some cosmic jive about a visiting space alien; it was the road map for a career spent luring the masses to the fringes and showing them all the weird and wonderful things happening on the other side.

How do you match a wine with one of the world’s most diverse and unusual artists of our generation?

Well….we have chosen this superb Great Southern Cabernet Franc 2019 because not only does it have full aromas of blackcurrant and black olive it also has flamboyant, avant-garde flavours of blackcurrant, pepper and cherry. This Cabernet Franc sits beautifully between both sexes. You could say that this iconic rock figure walked a fine line between both sexes with his artistic pursuits.

About the Producer

The producer of this fantastic Great Southern Cabernet Franc 2019 is in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. They are one of WA’s largest family owned and operated wine producers. The current owners represent the third and fourth generation living and working on the in-Frankland River. It is this family’s love and commitment the Great Southern, as well as the unique combination of gravelly loam soils, warm sunny days and cool nights during the ripening season that produce grapes of intense varietal character and a sense of place. The winery is rated a perfect 5 Red Stars by James Halliday in his 2021 Wine Companion.

Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:

Well you we don’t get a Cabernet Franc in WA very often especially one of this quality. It took some wheeling and dealing to get this deal over the line. This Cabernet Franc is just utterly superb just like the Iconic figure we have placed on the label. Its elegance is outstanding together with the beautiful classy dark blackcurrant flavours. This Cabernet Franc mimics the style and sophistication of the Icon, he was before his time and his death is still raw for us all. Long live this magnificent starman.

My Score 94/100 Gold Medal.

What is Cabernet Franc?

Cabernet franc is largely overshadowed by its more well-known cousin Cabernet Sauvignon. However, Cabernet Franc is widespread in France, the cooler regions of Europe and in most wine producing countries. The most common use for Cabernet Franc is as a blending partner, often minor, in so called Bordeaux blends. These wines are made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties, often with one or more of the less common Bordeaux varieties Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere.

The difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc?

As their names suggest these two wine grape varieties are related. Cabernet Franc is the older variety, Cabernet Sauvignon seems is its offspring. It is highly likely that the variety originated in Spain, rather than Bordeaux, perhaps as long ago as the 11th Century. Cabernet Franc ripens a little earlier and hence can be successful in slightly cooler areas than Cabernet Sauvignon. The Loire Valley and North Eastern Italy, both strongholds of the variety are cooler than Bordeaux.

Cabernet Franc wines tend to be softer than Cabernet Sauvignon. They have more fruit flavours, especially raspberries and thus are more likely to be given less oak treatment.
