Comments from Wine Buyer Steve

This Great Southern Back Vintage Shiraz Malbec 2020 comes from one of the Great Southern’s best wineries. They are a wonderful family operation that has a sensational name in the WA wine making industry. I have visited the winery and family on several occasions. They are always very welcoming and make you feel like one of the family. We have shared many good bottles of wine into the wee hours of the morning. I am always amazed at the quality of the wines they produce, and this Shiraz Malbec 2020 is no different. Great flavours of black cherry and plum combined with subtle oak treatment have created a very easy drinking Shiraz Malbec with some fantastic age under its belt. This back vintage wine is sensational value at $12.00 per bottle.   Score 91/100 – WAC Silver Medal.

It is this family’s love and commitment the Great Southern, as well as the unique combination of gravelly loam soils, warm sunny days and cool nights during the ripening season that produce grapes of intense varietal character and a sense of place. What is Shiraz?

The French and Americans call it Syrah, we call it Shiraz. A versatile variety and well suited to a range of climates and can be found in most of the grape growing regions of Australia.

In hot climates (such as the Barossa Valley of Australia), Shiraz is more consistently full-bodied with softer tannin, jammier fruit and spice notes of liquorice, anise and earthy leather. In many regions, the acidity and tannin levels of Shiraz allows the wines produced from the grape to have favourable aging potential.
