About The Wine

This awesome oaked Margaret River Limited Release Cabernet Merlot 2013 was basket pressed and matured in French oak for 3 years!! The wine is very rich and smooth with intense flavours of plum and rum and raisin. It is a full-bodied and very rich red wine. A spectacular aged Cabernet Merlot.

Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:

All I can say is WOW!! When this sample arrived, I was a bit apprehensive as it is a Cabernet Merlot with 7 years under its belt! I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a very rich and full-bodied red with magnificent oak flavours and dark forest berries. This is red to enjoy with a good steak or a rich pasta dish. Stunning! This is exceptional value at $20.00 per bottle as the winery sells it under the brand at $35.00 per bottle.

My Score 96/100 WACC Trophy.

About The Producer

This magnificent Margaret River Limited Release Cabernet Merlot 2013 comes from one of the pioneering wineries of the Wilyabrup region of Margaret River. The winery was established by the founders in 1976 and is owned by the same people to this day. Today, the wineries Wilyabrup estate has 18 hectares under vine consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and Verdelho.

The winery also operates another vineyard approximately10km from Wilyabrup, which was purchased in 1997 and subsequently planted with Shiraz and Merlot. All the vines on the estate are non-irrigated, relying on the typical two metres of annual rainfall to irrigate over the dry summers. The 40-year old dry grown vines are known to produce the wineries complex wines with qualities to allow aging.

About the region:

Margaret River is the major geographical indication wine region in southwest Western Australia, with 5,017 hectares under vine and 215 wineries as at 2012. Margaret River wine region is made up predominately of boutique size wine producers; although winery operations range from the smallest crushing 3.5 tonnes per year to the largest around 7000 tonnes.

The climate of Margaret River is more strongly maritime-influenced than any other major Australian region. It has the lowest mean annual temperature range, of the only 7.6C, and for good measure has the most marked Mediterranean climate in terms of rainfall, with only 200 millimetres of the annual 1160 millimetres falling between October and April. The low diurnal and seasonal temperature range means an unusually even accumulation of warmth. Overall the climate is similar to that of Bordeaux in a dry vintage.

Although the region produces just three per cent of total Australian grape production, it produces over 20 per cent of Australia’s premium wine market. The principal grape varieties are fairly evenly split between red and white; Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chenin blanc and Verdelho.
