About The Wine

This 2018 Padthaway (SA) Outré Graciano is Dark crimson red with brick red hue in colour. It has aromas of dark plum and cherry fruits with notes of savoury meats and old cedar.

The palate has Upfront flavours of dark plum and blackberries with grippy mid-palate weight and tannins, which hold together for an extended finish.

The premium Graciano fruit was fermented in a combination of static fermenters and underwent daily pumping over the skins. Following primary fermentation, the wine was pressed off into tank & barrels for Malo-lactic fermentation and maturation for 12 months in French oak.

Comments from Wine Buyer Steve

This Padthaway Graciano 2018 is an awesome addition to our Outré range of wines. It is great to finally have this Spanish grape variety wine on our list. It has a beautiful medium bodied flavour of ripe black berries and a fine elegant soft finish. When I tried the sample sent from the winery I had it at home with grilled haloumi cheese and chorizo and it was a marriage made in heaven. It is also an amazing bargain for our customers at $15.00 per bottle. The winery sells it for $25.00 per bottle.

About The Producer

The producer of this fantastic tempranillo has a wine making legacy that dates to 1852, stretching over six generations. Today they are owned and managed by a fourth-generation vigneron. They are producing boutique wine using high quality products from select vineyard sites across South Australia.

What is Graciano?

Graciano is used mostly in blends with Tempranillo in its native Spain. It is prized for the spiciness, acidity and tannin that it gives as the minor component in blends.

The original variety is Spanish and is named Graciano in its homeland the Northern Spanish Ebro Valley and Navarra. It is grown in the Jerez region under the name Tintilla de Rota. Graciano is used in France under the name Morrastel. But the Spanish use the variety called Mourvedre (or Mataro in Australia) under the name Morrastel.

The variety has a small but growing number of adherents in Australia where it is used in blends with Tempranillo or as a varietal. Straight Graciano wines tend to be big, soft and aromatic, sometimes a little too aromatic, but when done well they are very impressive, rich wines.

About the region:

Padthaway is a rich cluster of vines, agricultural plantations and rural businesses that stand collectively at the heart of the wine region.

At first glance, Padthaway is a small community, but its vibrancy outweighs the populace as vignerons, farmers and other members work hard to keep the pastures thriving. This Limestone Coast subregion prides itself on producing fresh vegetables while vanguard winemakers continue to diversify with various grape varieties.

Padthaway has thousands of hectares of vineyards and the area sustains around 30 wine producers. Key varieties here are cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and shiraz. The vineyards are unmissable as visitors enter the township, and thanks to the clay-rich soils and underground irrigation, the region yields fine fruits.

Here you can appreciate a leisurely country pace and tranquil lifestyle between the vineyards and open pastures. Introduce yourself to the locals and get a feel for this close-knit community. Visitors can expect to arrive within a three-hour drive from Adelaide or 40-minute drive from Naracoorte.
