Comments From Wine Buyer Steve
The Great Southern is my favourite WA wine region. The amount of top quality wine coming out of the region is just phenomenal. I believe the Chardonnay coming out of Pemberton and Frankland has now overtaken Margaret River in terms of intensity of fruit flavour and quality. This Chardonnay is full beautiful tropical melon flavours and has a medium texture on the palate from subtle oak treatment. The fruit used is just outstanding.
What is Chardonnay
Chardonnay grows well in all climates. Wines from vines grown in cooler climates show predominantly apple, quince, grapefruit and lime characters while those in warm and warm to hot climates are more peach and tropical fruit like. Fruit sourced from the Margaret River, Pemberton and Great Southern regions is used to craft some of Australia’s finest Chardonnay wines, richly flavoured and textured, well-structured wines.
Margaret River wines tend to be more powerful than those from more Southern areas, which typically are delicately flavoured and textured. Wines from both areas can show great complexity and length of flavour.
About The Producer
The producer of this fantastic Pemberton Sunsets Chardonnay is in the Great Southern region of Western Australia and is one of the most awarded wineries in the region. They are one of WA’s largest family owned and operated wine producers. The also source sensational fruit from nearby Pemberton. The winery is rated a perfect 5 Red Stars by James Halliday in his Wine Companion and has been rated this way for many years.
About the region
As one of Australia’s youngest wine regions, gazetted in 2006, the small Pemberton Wine Region has already established a reputation for being one the most exciting emerging wine regions. John Gladstones first recommended Pemberton as a potential wine grape area in 1977.
The first commercial vineyard was established in Pemberton in 1982 by Pat and Barbara Holt. Doctor Geoff Riley, who planted a varietal trial plot on his property in Conte Rd, encouraged the forming of The Pemberton Vignerons Association. He has the honor of being the first life member of the regional association. Since then over 40 vineyards have been established in this unique environment.
Surrounding Pemberton and Northcliffe, the region is home to many picturesque vineyards that adjoin karri forests. Most of the vineyards of the Pemberton Wine Region lie between the Donnelly River and the Warren River that flows through the region’s middle. The region is frequently referred to as “Karri Country” after the beautiful Karri forests. The soil supporting the region is karri loam a rich, red, fertile soil.
It combines southern latitude with high altitude 100 t0 200 meters above sea level and has a relatively cool climate, making it ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes and suited to the production of refined Bordeaux-style wines.
