The palate is rich and smooth, having had time to meld the lovely fruit flavours and the bold tannins. Great length! Beautiful oak integration after 24 months in brand new French oak barrels.

This Porongurup Back Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is on of the best producers located in the heart of the Great Southern Wine region of Western Australia. The fruit for this wine was sourced from a small winery in the Porongurups. The wine was matured in brand new French oak for 24 months and has full and rich flavors and beautiful oak integration. It is one of the best Cabernet’s from WA with age that I have found. A bargain at $18.00 per bottle. Winery Branded price is $40.00

What is Cabernet Sauvignon
This is one of the world’s most widely recognised red wine grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon became internationally recognised through its prominence in Bordeaux wines where it is often blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. From France, the grape spread across the world and can be found in Australia’s Margaret River, Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Mt Barker and Coonawarra regions.
The classic profile of Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be full-bodied wines with high tannins and noticeable acidity that contributes to the wine’s ageing potential. In cooler climates, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to produce wines with blackcurrant notes that can be accompanied by green bell pepper notes, mint and cedar which will all become more pronounced as the wine ages.
About the region:
The stunning sub-region of Porongurup is gaining traction for its production of exemplary wines.
The Porongurup region may be small, but it offers a range of quality grapes and wines that have been consistently awarded over the years. The Mediterranean and long ripening season of the region, lying just east of Mount Barker, produces exceptional quality fruit with intense flavours. Porongurup is about four and a half hours’ drive from Perth, and visitors can expect to taste styles including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir, but its Riesling is a particular hero. One of the key features of the region is the Porongurup National Park for incredible walks summiting the granite boulders of Castle Rock and the Granite Skywalk.
While this subregion locks into that of Mount Barker on its west, and covers the same latitude range, the feel of Porongurup is quite different. Great stands of lowering eucalypt forest and a massive series of rounded granite knobs in one part give way to sweeping views out over the Stirlings towards Esperance in another.
It was the scene of relatively early vinicultural activity after the Olmo and Gladstones reports; two hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted at the Bolyanup Vineyard in 1974; others followed in the 1970s, more in the 1980s (Castle Rock in 1983), and yet more in the 1990s.
