What is Chardonnay

Chardonnay grows well in all climates. Wines from vines grown in cooler climates show predominantly apple, quince, grapefruit and lime characters while those in warm and warm to hot climates are more peach and tropical fruit like. Fruit sourced from the Margaret River, Pemberton and Great Southern regions is used to craft some of Australia’s finest Chardonnay wines, richly flavoured and textured, well-structured wines.

Margaret River wines tend to be more powerful than those from more Southern areas, which typically are delicately flavoured and textured. Wines from both areas can show great complexity and length of flavour.

About The Producer

The first vines at this winery were planted in the 1930s in Clare Valley and produce their superb top tier range of wines. As South Australia is phylloxera free and didn’t suffer the scourge of this vineyard disease which wiped out most of the world’s vineyards, these are some of the older vines still in commercial use in the world.

In 1963, the founders of the winery purchased the Devlin’s Pound property near Overland Corner in South Australia and planted the limestone-based vineyard to a range of grape varieties, most notably Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay which have all received Gold medals for their premium wine quality. They also now own vineyards in Scott’s Creek in South Australian Riverland region from which the fruit for this wine was grown.

About the region

South Australia is home to some of the worlds renowned wine regions such as the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, Riverland and the Coonawarra to name a few.  All of these regions excel in the production of quality red wines. The soil, climates and topography are ideal for producing grape red grape varieties and in particular Cabernet and Shiraz.

South Australian wine regions can hold their own against some of the world’s best red wine drinking regions.
