What is Riesling

Riesling vines are particularly hard-wooded and like cold weather. They bud late, so are well-suited to the coldest wine-growing climates. The berries are small, round and soft when ripe, with tender, greenish-yellow skins that have a flecked appearance. The bunches hang in tight, winged clusters that ripen later than other varieties.

Riesling has a powerful and distinctive floral and apple-like aroma that frequently mixes in mineral elements from its vineyard source and is often described as racy. The most frequently encountered aroma or flavour for the Riesling are woodruff, rose petal, violet, apple, pear, peach or apricot.

Some of Australia’s best Rieslings come from the Clare Valley region South Australia and the Great Southern region of Western Australia. These Riesling are acclaimed for their intense flavours and longevity.

About The Producer

The first vines at this winery were planted in the 1930s in Clare Valley and produce their superb top tier range of wines. As South Australia is phylloxera free and didn’t suffer the scourge of this vineyard disease which wiped out most of the world’s vineyards, these are some of the older vines still in commercial use in the world.

In 1963, the founders of the winery purchased the Devlin’s Pound property near Overland Corner in South Australia and planted the limestone-based vineyard to a range of grape varieties, most notably Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay which have all received Gold medals for their premium wine quality. They also now own vineyards in Scott’s Creek in South Australian Riverland region from which the fruit for this wine was grown.

About The Wine

This South Australian Riesling 2021 has aromas of stone fruit and mixed herbs over a foundation of citrus, especially lime. It is clean and fresh with a dose of lusciousness, pineapple and pomegranates.

On the palate citrus flavours dominate with equal doses of lemons and limes but also mandarin and orange peel. Medium weight palate, beautifully balanced with a refreshing tang to the finish, as you’d expect from Clare.

The winery behind this wine is rated 4.5 stars by James Halliday in the wine companion.
