What is a Vermentino?

Vermentino is one of the exciting new white varieties from Southern Italy that are making an impression on the wine scene in Australia. Since the turn of the 21st Century more Australian wineries, especially those in the mild to warm wine regions, are turning to Vermentino.

The variety has the ability to produce wines with firm acidity and good flavour even under the hot conditions experienced in some recent vintages. One indication of it’s growing importance is that since 2009 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show (AAVWS) has had a class for Vermentino to be judged separately. Previously it was in the “other whites” classes. In 2017 there were 41 Australian Vermentino wines judged at AAVWS. There are now more than one hundred Australian producers of this variety, a huge vote of confidence by Australian Winemakers, and the willingness of Australian wine lovers to try something new.

About The Wine:

This wine is refreshing and zesty. Typically, it is complex to taste, with lively aromas of cider apples and white flowers combined with a palate of crushed lime and citrus core. It has that wonderful minerality and saltiness which Vermentino displays making it superb with garlic prawns, crab linguini and chicken tacos. The producer of this wine practices natural winemaking methods including no herbicide, very low chemical inputs, minimal filtration and a sustainable composting program

Comments from Wine Buyer Steve

This is an awesome Vermentino from the heart of the Blackwood Valley in Western Australia. Sourced from one of the few blocks of Vermentino in WA, grown on elevated, well grained, deep gravel and laterite soils and ripening in warm dry summer days giving the wine its firm sense of terroir not dissimilar to its cousin the fashionable aromatic white of Sardinia  It’s beautiful with nice crisp, dry lime characters and easy to drink. The bonus is it is also a natural wine with no herbicide used, organic composting methods and minimal filtration. A bargain at $15.00 per bottle as the winery sells it for $30.00.

About the region:

Since 1976 the Blackwood Valley wine region in WA has increasingly taken advantage of its favourable soils and climactic conditions to produce wines of class and distinction.

Complementing the wine is the special environment – bush walks are favourite activities for tourists, who also enjoy local restaurants, art and antiques.

Lush green pastures, forests of tall trees, gently flowing rivers that wind through the valleys among undulating hills, peaceful rural towns, fertile farmlands, orchards and vineyards make the area one of Western Australia’s most picturesque.
