Comments from Wine Buyer Steve

I am a big fan of Pinot Grigio, it is the only white wine I drink at home on a regular basis. I find them a cross between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay. There is some good mouth feel and texture together with good hints of tropical fruit. This 2023 Yarra Valley Outré Pinot Grigio is an awesome wine of this variety from Victoria. A great everyday wine and is sensational value at $13.00 per bottle.

About The Producer

The winery that produces this fantastic wine sources exceptional parcels of fruit from some of Australia’s best known wine regions, including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Coonawarra, and Yarra Valley. They are passionate producers of some of the best wines in this country and have been so for over 40 years.

About the region:

The Yarra Valley is the birthplace of Victorian wine. And despite its 170-year legacy, it’s far from old. In fact, it’s a hub for innovation and home to some of the most progressive, dynamic winemakers in the world.

Only an hour’s drive from the heart of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is an epicurean adventure for those with a passion for wine, food and breathtaking landscapes. It’s an unforgettable experience where craft and country come together to create cool-climate quality of international renown.

Over eighty wineries span the Yarra Valley, each of which express the diversity of its terroir, the passion of its producers, a mastery of traditional practices and a rebellious instinct to push the boundaries. No other region in the world can boast the same consistent quality found in this internationally awarded range of wine varieties, which includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and – Australia’s best-kept secret – the Yarra Valley Shiraz.

What is Pinot Grigio?

Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are becoming increasingly popular wines in Australia. You could argue that they are no longer alternative varieties but have become mainstream. This white wine variety is being used in most Australian wine regions, but it is especially suitable in the cooler regions, such as the Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley or Tasmania.

In Europe Pinot grigio is widely planted in France, Italy, Germany and Austria, as well as in dozens of other countries from Canada to Romania to Switzerland to New Zealand Given the inherent variation of this variety and its geographic dispersion it is hardly surprising that a wide range of wine styles are produced from it. In Alsace under the name of Tokay d’Alsace, it produces a rich, almost oily wine. In Northern Italy the Pinot Grigio’s are light and even spritzig. Under the name of Rulander in Germany it produces wines somewhat similar to white Burgundies

Pinot Grigio has attracted serious interest in Australia only over the past two decades.
