What is Chardonnay

Chardonnay grows well in all climates. Wines from vines grown in cooler climates show predominantly apple, quince, grapefruit and lime characters while those in warm and warm to hot climates are more peach and tropical fruit like. Fruit sourced from the Margaret River, Pemberton and Great Southern regions is used to craft some of Australia’s finest Chardonnay wines, richly flavoured and textured, well-structured wines.

Margaret River wines tend to be more powerful than those from more Southern areas, which typically are delicately flavoured and textured. Wines from both areas can show great complexity and length of flavour.

About The Producer

In 1999 David and Caroline Picton-King decided to exchange living and working in Perth for grape growing and winemaking in Mount Barker. They began to convert desire into reality in 2000 when they purchased the property and planted 1ha of shiraz. In ’01 and ’03 they planted 2.4ha of chardonnay, and finally 1.3ha of cabernet sauvignon in ’04, with ‘soft’ organic management. They had been commuting from Perth every couple of weeks to plant and tend the vines up to ’04 when they moved permanently to Mount Barker. The majority of the grapes are sold to other wineries in the district, with most wine sales through the cellar door and café.

About the region

The Mount Barker wine region is located approximately 3hrs drive south of Perth. Its a great place to make camp and explore the five wine producing sub regions within the Great Southern: Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and the Porongurup.

Producing around 37% of wine grapes grown in WA, the Great Southern is one of Australia’s largest Regions. The Great Southern offers unique and varied climates for grape growing. Renowned both nationally and internationally for Riesling, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Great Southern and in particular Mount Barker offer the wine traveler a chance to try many classic wine varieties grown and made to perfection.

About The Wine

This Mount Barker Back Beach Chardonnay 2020 is a smooth, well rounded lightly oaked Chardonnay with a hint of Apple, Pear & Grapefruit flavours.

Comments From Wine Buyer Steve

This a a fantastic easy drinking oaked Chardonnay from the beautiful Mount Barker wine region. This Chardonnay is full beautiful tropical melon flavours and has a medium texture on the palate from subtle oak treatment. The fruit used is just outstanding.

My Score 91/100 WACC Silver medal.
